Confederate was founded on April 2,1991. Our task was to manufacture superior handcrafted,
uncompromised street motorcycles of unsurpassed structure and quality, utilizing American industrial
and mechanical design excellence in its purest and most organic form. Over the next three years, from
a clean sheet of paper a new motorcycle was designed. The result - the achievement of the following
performance benchmarks:
No frame flex
No crank to output shaft flex
Absolute fatigue resistance
No core deterioration
Frame and swingarm machined from billet steel
Powertrain mounting system machined from billet aluminum
Superior hand heliarc weldments
Precise hand assembly
Re-buildable by hand
Simple maintenance
Proven American radial inspired V-Twin power
Bullet proof non-unit gearbox
American ergonomic scale (long and low)
Uncompromised component specifications
Absolute minimal un-sprung weight
On November 11 1994, Veteran's Day, our first motorcycle was fired up and tested. It proved
everything we had hoped for. It possessed "world class" chassis dynamics, with that special hard to
define "All-American" character.
Thus began our development stage, (1995 - 1996) which resulted in four additional prototype
motorcycles. It was during this period that matters concerning the tuning of the machine began in
earnest. Early attempts to conceptualize our supply chain were begun. Dimensional accuracy and
precision were evolved. A collective 250 thousand miles was covered. Each machine was broken
down, examined and reconstructed on a constant and repeated basis. The final production result was a
motorcycle possessing incomparable steering accuracy, precision and linearity of feel; high
performance, entirely predictable street handling characteristics; powerful, entirely predictable
braking; unparalleled ride smoothness; extreme operational ease and overall user friendliness; slick,
light, precise clutch and gear change engagement; and world leading low and mid range torque.
During 1997 a limited production run of 15 Confederate motorcycles were manufactured. In 1998, 50
machines were produced. In 1999, proprietary Confederate technology was granted protection through
the issuance of US patent number 5,857,538 covering 20 claims. In that year, 130 bikes were built. In
2000, 215 Confederates were manufactured.
Only 56 of our 250 handcrafted 2001 model year production remains unsold. New factory order
motorcycles are presently being fulfilled within 75 days of receipt thereof.
